5 Tips: How to Safely Transition Your Parking Facility to the New Reality

As Canadian provinces begin the process of reopening, appropriate measures are recommended for a safe transition to a “new normal.” As society begins to open their doors, it is important now more than ever, that property managers prepare for a smart transition.

Whether your parking operation is gated, has parking meters, or both, the following tips will help your organization mitigate risk and reduce the spread of COVID-19; while welcoming visitors, tenants and staff to your property safely.

Smart Safety Signage

Help control the spread of COVID-19 with safety signage such as, social distancing precautions, hand washing and contactless payment instructions. Signage can include gate arm decals, elevator and staircase signage, floor decals and much more.

Parking Attendants

Keep your onsite parking attendants and visitors safe with plexiglass barriers and protocols to minimize the number of customers permitted within the parking office at a time. Additionally, your parking staff should utilize remote communication technology to screen visitors, permitting entry only for matters that require in-person transactions that can’t be conducted otherwise.

If your facility does not have onsite parking staff, offering remote customer service 24/7 for all customer inquiries is a smart idea.

Service Technicians

Your parking facility’s service technician(s) should be practicing physical distancing and proper hygiene practices as they continue their ongoing support. Make sure your service technician(s) are cleaning and disinfecting the device touch points after completing service.

Easy Touchless Technology Upgrades

If available encourage your patrons to use contactless payment methods. Additionally, consider retrofitting your parking equipment with touchless technology upgrades such as:

  • Automatically dispensed entry tickets at gated parking entries when a vehicle is detected

  • Infrared touchless buttons activated with a simple hand wave, permitting automatic entry at gated parking entries

  • Tap and go EMV-certified payment technology

  • Installation of license plate recognition equipment

  • Parking equipment technology accepting barcode, QR code, or Bluetooth low energy readers

  • Mobile parking payment applications

Parking facility Deep Cleaning Services

Ensure your parking equipment, pay stations and parking offices are cleaned and disinfected multiple times per day and when visibly dirty. In addition to day-to-day cleaning and sanitization, consider deep cleaning your parking facility. Deep cleaning can include power sweeping and washing, waste removal services and thorough cleaning of your pay station exteriors.
