How Does LPR Work for Parking Enforcement?

Q&A with Manager of Research and Development Abhadesh Sharma.

Licence plate recognition technology is often associated with scenarios such as traffic law enforcement cameras, electronic tolling systems, and automatic facility access. However, one critical feature of an LPR system is often overlooked, and that's how it can help parking operators enforce parking rules within their facility.

But how exactly does an LPR system work with parking enforcement? We asked Precise ParkLink's Manager of Engineering, Abhadesh Sharma, how an LPR system can enhance parking enforcement and empower more accurate results.

Q. How does LPR enhance my facility's security?

A. In non-gated parking lots, LPR technology comes into play with devices situated at the entry or exit of the facility or with licence plate-based cloud platforms. These systems can be paired with Pay-by-License Plate parking meters, mobile payment apps, or mobile scan-to-pay web platforms.

Since non-gated parking facilities operate under an honour system, LPR-based enforcement technology must verify valid parking sessions by licence plates. With LPR devices mounted on enforcement vehicles, patrol officers no longer need to manually check each licence plate against a database of authorized parkers or photograph infractions. LPR's ability to record and associate the license plate and an image of the vehicle to a violation notice improve patrolling accuracy and reduce dispute rates.
